St.Paul's Eye Hospital Initiative - Organ Donation
21st December, 2016
I have suffered since I was young with a degenerative eye condition called Keratoconus and 3 months ago I had a Corneal Transplant done to help restore vision in my right eye.
I am backing an initiative that my hospital St. Paul's Eye Hospital has launched which aims to raise the awareness of the importance of eye donations for transplant and research purposes. It also encourages more people to donate their eyes to help others affected by sight loss.
We all take our vision for granted and it's not until you or someone in your family starts to lose your vision you realise how much it affects you/your family daily.
My cornea was kindly donated from someone who had signed up on the organ donation site. I will be forever grateful of their kindness. There is a national shortage. I was very lucky! No matter what condition your eyes are in or whether you have other medical conditions or undergone cancer treatment the eye can be used in many ways which can change many lives.
It's changed mine massively and hopefully it will continue to improve with time too.
All organ donation is massively important but please also consider ticking that box to donate your eyes.
Please also spread the word to family and friends too. 🙂 it only takes a few minutes to sign up today!!

I was lucky today to visit the labs where all the pioneering research happens into eye conditions and diseases. They do an absolute amazing job and with eye donations they are able to try and create new treatments that can hopefully help people with sight loss conditions.
